The Price We Pay
Why We Don’t Experience Unity Far too often, one Christians glory is another Christian’s pain. When we have to quench our thirst for God by substituting our own human glory we easily turn on each other with vengeance because the same glory we think we have achieved, we think we also have to protect. Even as Christians, we put each other down in order to make ourselves be more important. Sometimes, we even pride ourselves with how well we hurt each other. It grieves the heart of God that we settle for so little. Jesus said it best, "The glory which You have given Me I have given to them, that they may be one, just as We are one; I in them and You in Me, that they may be perfected in unity, so that the world may know that You sent Me, and loved them, even as You have loved Me." (John 17:22,23). It is only the glorious presence of God that will unite us and make us one. Feeding on human glory has greatly reduced the effectiveness of our witness as Christians. We need to quench our desires with God, because the effectiveness of our witness depends on it. As long as we keep trying to drink from the glory of earthly things, Christians will always be divided. We will never experience the unity that is possible unless we change sources, draw near to God, and receive the glorious presence of the Holy Spirit.
